A NEW AND EXCITING COMPETITION

LET THERE BE a ROCK (opera or concept album)

After the resounding success of the A.R.S.E Groups I AM THE BAND CHALLENGE – described by some as the best challenge ever held on Red bubble – We at A.R.S.E have decided to give everyone another chance to show off their artistic muscles.
Without much fanfare we would like YOU – the creative geniuses out there – to create your own Rock Opera or concept work related to popular music.
As a quick reference check out Pink Floyd’s The Wall, or The Who’s Tommy and Quadrophenia, any of Rick Wakeman’s solo albums King Arthur, Journey to the centre of the earth), any early stuff by Lloyd Webber /Rice (JC Superstar, Joseph and his Technicolor yawn) , Godspell, Mama Mia, Gorillaz even KISS.
As you can see we like to paint with a BROAD BRUSH here at A.R.S.E.
Your submission can take shape in one of many forms or several mixed together.
How big or small is up to you.
Imagination and ideas is the key to winning.
So do a poster, a song, an animation, a theatrical stage set up, a CD cover, a movie trailer, a pitch, a storyline brief, a cartoon, a model, costume design or all of these mix together in a large soup.
Only you hold back what can be achieved.
I believe a few people came close to achieving what this challenge is about in the previous competition.
So use those skills you honed and rustle up some artistic goodness.
Please must be new works if you were in the last challenge unless they are expanded on considerably.
All works will be posted on the A.R.S.E website and blog.

You will need to join the A.R.S.E Group to enter.

All entries are to linked from the Group Forum but can posted on any other site you wish to tell your tale appropriately.

After a wee bit of a break(down) the ARSE blog is bag to showcase and highlight great pieces of work from all the A.R.S.E Souls.
Beginning with this challenge in the next month or so.

With the pending release of the world’s most famous virtual/cartoon band THE GORILLAZ the ARSE Group has announced it’s first challenge for 2010.
The challenge titles I AM THE BAND is a chance for you the contestant to become your very own ROCK STAR, ROCK BAND ,MANAGER, PR & AOR Department.
What we want from you – our dear contestant- is to a devise concept, and it can be small or all encompassing. It can be a piece of music, a video on youtube, a gif, a poster, a CD, a concept of a band you would like to see, maybe all of these combined.
The limit is only set by your imagination.
While technique and professionalism are worthy traits, we are also looking at ideas and imagination. Don’t think you aren’t clever enough.
So if you have some old tapes of you singing, shove them in a sampler and create a monster. IF you have some pictures of you dressed as KISS member, drag them out and photo shop them. Always wanted to do CD cover, or even a 12 inch fold out sleeve , now is your chance.
All we ask is it is your creation.
Your band.
Do a poster, create a cartoon or comic strip, upload a piece of music or make a music video.
The prizes will be worth it.
They will be announced during the competition and will be in excess of $100 in value.

....there was Redbubble.

And Redbubble decided there would be groups, and it was good.
There were poetry groups, writing groups, photographic groups, drawing groups, tshirt groups and vector groups.

And then along came a man with a vision - for a group that would be not the biggest, nor the most popular group or the most obscure group ...... it would be the best group!

So the Parody, Satire and Lampoon collective was formed, and they came.
And the word came down that they should take the piss and they did and it was good.

They then became A.R.S.E and it was better!

And then they were called to battle against plagiarism here, and it was won and it was good - pushed out in a sweeping generalisation here - and again they rallied and it was good.

**Cathie says: "Just in case I start believing my publicity, here's a little profile Mr Nolan did on me last year .... nothing like a little piss taking to restore normality!! ;p

Ronnie Purcell emailed this to me last week and I wasn’t quite sure why?
I think it was a call for help.

Cathie T is an exceptional artist, writer and photographer, she deserves to be sainted and possibly given a Nobel Peace Prize.

I am writing this because if I don’t Cathie T who is on the other side of my office door will refuse to leave if I don’t. Not only won’t she leave but if I try and make a any effort to depart she will beat me within an inch of my life with the large baseball bat she is brandishing.

I can hear her outside dragging it on the floor talking to her self. Repeating things like:

“I am proud
I am an artist
recognise me or
I’m remove your pelvis”

And

“Ronnie, Ronnie
write me in a story
if not all they’ll find
will be red and gory”

Frightening stuff really.
I’m starting to wonder if she had anything to do with the disappearing animal’s from the zoo.

She is from Adelaide you know?

Cathie T was born on Christmas day in a stable just outside of Nazareth, her closet friends were sheep…….
…..Hang on I got side tracked It sounds like she’s peeling the plasterboard off the wall .

Cathie T was the only daughter of Santa Clause and Mary Christmas who grew up with elves and pixies and wild reindeer…
….. sorry, I keep stuffing up. I do believe she’s eating the books from the waiting room book case.

This whole born on the 25th of December has got me rattled.

Cathie T is a lovely person who encourages others and lives life to the fullest. Check out her portfolio it is full of stuff.

Now if I can only get to a phone and call the cops I might see Christmas as well.

Who is NoFrillsArt?

Who is NoFrillsArt?
NoFrillsArt is Glen Smith an exciting Artist and Teacher who has been a member of Red Bubble since August 2007.

Glen’s art is anything but NoFrills - if you scan through his portfolio you see a great eye for the absurd and great sense of satire, whether it be Art , fame or commercial Glen’s art also explores social commentary themes such as environment and advertising.

Glen is no stranger to the art scene he studied Fine Art (painting) - yes he can also paint - at RMIT University. He received his Honors in printmaking and a Dip ed. at Melbourne University. As well as being a High School arts/media teacher he is also Chair of the Geelong Arts Alliance (GAA) an arts body affiliated to Regional Arts Victoria.

The GAA also keeps Glen busy on the weekends and his days off. The GAA runs a small gallery in North Geelong called West10, which is a part of the Victorian Initiatives of Artists network (Via-N). Glen often doubles as an Arts worker instigating and coordinating community arts projects. (see link at end of story)

Glen is currently running a project with another artist David Dellafiora creating a performance and artists multiple edition around badges called ‘I know my place’. Out of the seven artists involved two other Redbubble artists are also involved, nonstop and jaclynpoole.

With all this extra activety going on it’s a wonder Glen can be proliffic as he has been.
In such a short time on the Bubble Glen says it’s had quite an influence on his work
“It has given me a renewed passion to create through its dialog and positive encouragement in all aspects, be it kind words, favorting of works, or the coveted sale of art. Plus it’s a little addictive! After you leave say art school, many people drop out of action and stop making art all together due to not having exposure to peers and I think that is one of the most beneficial things RB does in connecting a large number of people, in the comfort of your own home, so you are bound to find artists you admire and who inspire your practice. Plus I also like the competitions and the ‘challenges’ thrown up to encourage the art making process. With my artwork just being on a canvas was never really the outcome I was looking for so seeing the work on tees wandering the streets, art integrated into life, now that’s cool.”

When asked about what style of art he preferred Glen said with his work he tried to make social comments using icons and symbols from everyday pop culture. While throwing in a little subversion, a touch of humor and hope for the best. Philosophically he just feels that one should be creative, passionate, original, inventive and subversive…but most importantly…create art.
Another side of Glen’s work is its humour and parody. Glen injects a sense of fun into sometimes serious subjects, all the time not losing sight of the message within.
